A woman has died and a four-year-old girl has been left in critical condition after a 100-foot tree fell on top of a wedding party in Southern California. Five guests were also injured.

The group had lined under the tall eucalyptus in Whittier’s Penn Park for a group shot when the tree toppled, trapping several guests underneath.

Rescuers used chainsaws to pull out people from under the branches. The tree fell around 4:30 pm and the rescue continued throughout the evening.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the tree to fall. Officials speculated that the California drought could have weakened the eucalyptus.

One of the guests, described as an older woman, died on her way to the hospital, KTLA reported. She hasn’t been identified.

The four-year-old girl was left in critical condition after suffering head trauma, according to Whittier police.

The five injured had minor to moderate injuries, NBC reported.

A witness said the tree had split in two before it collapsed and landed on several guests.

The Los Angeles County fire department responded to the scene after receiving a report about the incident around 4:45 pm.
