Two Ethiopian nationals arrested for illegal entry

The Immigration office at Songwe Border post in Karonga, the northern district of Malawi, has arrested two Ethiopian nationals for entering the country without traveling documents.Confirming the development, Songwe border Immigration spokesperson Yusuf Shaibu identified the two as Masele Adise 22 from Addis Ababa and Tsagai Salamon 23 from Awasa village in Ethiopia.

According to Shaibu, the two were aided by some motor cycle taxi operators.

“We have also managed to recover the motor cycle which the aiders used to ferry the illegal immigrants into our country,” said Shaibu.

He said “this happened on Monday night when the officers mounted a snap road-block at Kating’inda along M1 Road and that the motor cycle operators passed the area forcibly but we chased them using a land cruiser vehicle.”

Shaibu said that the officers failed to arrest the motor cycle operators but assured to find them.

The Songwe border Immigration spokesperson further said that the immigrants revealed that they were on their way to South Africa during interrogation and that Malawi was just a transit way.

Recently, the same team of officers managed to apprehend four illegal immigrants who were from Ethiopia and confiscated two motor bikes in the process.

Meanwhile, the Songwe border Immigration Officer in Charge Chizimu has expressed worry over the continued tendency of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants by some unpatriotic Malawians and has vowed to deal with them in accordance to the law.
